Cleaning Carpets Hints, Tips And Methods

Keeping Carpets Clean

The most important tip to keeping your carpet and furnishings looking good is the regular vacuuming every few days using a powerful vacuum cleaner. This will remove surface dirt and grit which otherwise will pass down through the fibres of the carpet and in doing so will wear away the strands and fibres causing the carpet to lose its appearance.

Soil and dirt can damage these fibres permanently if allowed to remain in the pile and should be removed as often as possible by the vacuum process. This is the only method to prevent fibre abrasion, other than limiting the amount of traffic that the flooring receives.

An added bonus of regular vacuum cleaning of carpets is it will reduce the amount of dust mites present which can also help control allergies.

Areas in the home or workplace that receive the most traffic, such as hallways, stairs and porches / entrances should be cleaned more regularly. In these high traffic areas it is recommended to vacuum the entire carpet a minimum of at least twice per week for the best results.

Carpet Cleaning Tip:

Another tip for keeping your carpets looking good is to use floor mats where ever possible to your advantage. Floor and door entrance mats are easily cleaned, are inexpensive to buy, and much cheaper to replace than a new carpets. Used in areas of heavy traffic such as doorways and the main entrances to your home they can have a big impact on the reduction of soiling and wear and tear on carpeting.

Long floor mats can be bought cheapily for use in halls and on landings.

Tips On Removing Stains:

When the inevitable happens and drink, food, or anything else is spilled on the carpet the important think to remember is to attack the stain speedily. The fast treatment of any spillage on a carpet (especially silk or wool) can prevent a stain occurring. Before instantly reaching for chemicals and detergents it is important to establish what has been spilled and then choose the correct product, or equipment to treat it. The best solution would be to have at hand a carpet cleaning machine which utilises water extraction. This type of carpet cleaner uses mild detergents to wash and remove stains from carpeting but also extracts the majority of the water and dirty solution afterwards. This allows the carpets to dry out faster but more importantly removes the dirt and soiling from the carpet.

Off the shelf carpet cleaning products and sprays such as can be purchased from supermarkets and DIY stores lack this method of cleaning. With no extraction method the dirty cleaning solution has to remain in the carpet and hence the flooring can never look as good as when it was new.

Purchasing Or Hiring Cleaning Equipment:

Although the cost to buy cleaning equipment has reduced over the last few years a professional machine can cost several hundred pounds to buy. Consideration has to be given as to how often the flooring needs to be cleaned and whether it is more cost effective to hire a carpet cleaner in preference to purchasing such a unit.

When hiring a carpet cleaner it is important to ensure sufficient quantities of cleaning detergents are purchased to allow full and effective of all neccessary floor areas which need addressing.

This type of equipment can be rented from local tool hire shops.
